1 What is facemask?

1.1 Definition of Facemask

Facemask is a kind of hygiene supplies, generally refers to the application that is worn in the mouth and nose position to filter the air into the mouth and nose. Besides, its function is to block harmful gases, smells, droplets in and out of the wearer’s mouth and nose, and it made from gauze or paper.

At present, medical masks in China are mainly divided into three types: the medical masks with the highest level of protection, the surgical masks commonly used in the invasive operating environment such as the operating room, and the disposable medical masks of an ordinary level.

1.2 Standard of the Face mask in the world


According to the Japanese industrial standard, protective masks are divided into dust mask (JIST 8151,1991), particle mask (JIST 8160,1992) and disposable protective mask (JIST 8158,1984). The first is the swimsuit protection particles larger dust, smoke, fog drops; The second protects against smaller particles. These standards use different aerosols to test the penetrability of filters, and dust masks use quartz dust.

NIOSH classifies its certified particulate respirators into nine categories under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) code 42 CFR Part 84. The certification was conducted by NIOSH’s NPPTL (National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory) Laboratory.

According to the filtering characteristics of the filter screen in the middle of the mask, it can be divided into the following three types:

Ø Level 100: represents a minimum filtration efficiency of 99.97%.

Ø Level 99: represents a minimum filtration efficiency of 99%.

Ø Level 95: represents a minimum filtration efficiency of 95%.

According to the lowest filtration efficiency of the filter material, the mask can be divided into the following three grades:

Ø P series: P stands for oil Proof, which can be used to protect non-oily and oily suspended particles.

Ø R series: R stands for Resistant to oil, which can be used to protect non-oily and oily suspended particles.

Ø N series: N stands for Not resistant to oil and can be used to protect against non-oily suspended particles.

The N95 mask is one of nine NIOSH (national institute of occupational safety and health) certified respirators against particulate matter. “N” means it is not suitable for oily particles (the cooking smoke is oily particles, and people speak, or cough droplets are not oily); “95” refers to the 95% filtration efficiency under NIOSH standard testing conditions. N95 is not a specific product name. Products that meet the N95 standard and are approved by NIOSH are considered N95 masks.

CE certification must be obtained for products sold in the EU market. From 2019, the new regulation (EU) 2016/425 will be enforced, and all masks exported to the EU must obtain CE certification under the new regulation. Eu standards for common respiratory products are as follows:

AS/NZS 1716:2012 is the standard for respiratory protection devices in Australia and New Zealand. Manufacturing processes and tests must conform to this specification. The standard specifies the procedures and materials that must be used in the manufacture of particle masks, as well as determining test and performance results to ensure their safe use.

A. GBT 32610-2016 classifies masks into four levels

The difference between the two standards is that GB/T 32610 cannot be used for industrial dustproof, but GB 2626-2006 can be used for industrial dustproof.

4 Working process for the facemask making machine
